Fletcher Christian: Quote for March 18, 2008

We're not afraid of a new life anywhere as long as we can live it with decency and self-respect. We can and we must for ourselves and our children.

from: Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)

-- Fletcher Christian

Watch Clark Gable acting as Fletcher Christian ......

In 1789 Fletcher Christian led a mutiny on the British ship the Bounty commanded by William Bligh. In 1790 Fletcher Christian, eight mutineers, six Tahitian men, and eleven Tahitian women, one with a baby, took the Bounty to Pitcairn Island, in an attempt to hide from British authorities and establish a new life.

For some reason, Christian's arithmetic was off. He tried to establish a colony with fifteen men and eleven women. Assuming that no one was gay, this posed a problem. Fletcher Christian was killed in 1793 while fighting to preserve the life of "decency and self-respect" he dreamed of.
