My children: a new dispensation comes to us today. Will you receive it? Will you free yourselves? Will you recover the lands stolen three hundred years ago from your forefathers by the hated Spaniards? We must act at once… Will not you defend your religion and your rights as true patriots? Long live our Lady of Guadalupe! Death to bad government! Death to the gachupines!
On September 16th Mexicans celebrate Independence Day. On this day in 1810 Miguel Hidalgo, a Catholic priest, spoke to his people in front of a Church in the small town of Delores. He called for them to free themselves from Spain. His actual words are unknown. The above quote is one version of his speech. It took over a decade of war before the Spanish crown recognized Mexican independence on September 27, 1821.
